Natural Remedies for Your Little One's Cold and Flu Days: My Guide to Gentle Care and Immune Support
Hi peeps,
It crushes me when my little pal is under the weather. His cheery, upbeat demeanor shifts…not to mention his TEARS. MY HEART! Little buddy picked something up this past week and it made me want to share our tried-and-true protocol for those inevitable cold, flu, or mild fever days. Remember, what works for us may not work for everyone, but I hope these tips and tricks will be helpful for your little doodle too!
In general, we do our best to steer clear of over-the-counter medications (OTMs) as much as possible. But, when Archie is inconsolable, when the scary high fever hits, and if nothing else seems to help, we turn to Genexa Infant Pain and Fever – a clean alternative to traditional liquid medications. Taking meds is tough enough, so topping that off with nasty additives like high fructose corn syrup, sucralose, and dyes found in other traditional products-yuckies. We prefer to keep our littles body as natural and safe as can be.
If we end up needing meds (and even if we don’t!) we amp up the probiotics for both of us. I swear by Mary Ruth's Infant Liquid Probiotics – they don't bother the little guys' taste buds one bit. Being lucky enough to still breastfeed (I know it's not possible for everyone), but if you can or have a stash of breast milk, it's a secret weapon against sickness. Breast milk contains special immune-boosting properties tailored to fight off whatever virus is bugging your little one. I also learned recently that the urge to smother your baby with kisses is a way to pick up pathogens from their face, triggering the production of targeted antibodies in breast milk that provide a personalized shield against infections. Mind BLOWN- that is crazy science!! What?!
Also important to not forget a nice luke warm tubs and all the skin-to-skin cuddles possible. Trust me, the snuggles do wonders for both baby and mama –instant mood booster.
While taking care of the babe, let’s not forget to take a moment and brace yourself for the classic- whatever the kid has, I'll likely have it in three days' time! So, when it's time to protect myself, I turn to a few magical tinctures. Leafy Organics is one of my favorite companies. Period. Their immunity blend works like a charm. Even with my strange onion intolerance, their magic elixir doesn't bother me. Onions contain potent antioxidants, such as quercetin, which have been shown to have antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties so I am happy to get them on board without having any reactive issues. These compounds not only help the body combat infections but also aid in reducing inflammation, bringing relief to achy bodies
As a bonus, I take the Tart Cherry “Nidra” tincture as a melatonin substitute and for helping with general muscle recovery and achyness. From the power trio, when the sickness is looming or has arrived I also take "Prana", their Turmeric and Ginger tincture as a healthy Tylenol replacement– all the benefits minus the icky side effects.
I can't get enough of Tasha Rose Victory Elixir, which I use almost daily. On the day-to-day it helps me fight seasonal allergies and respiratory issues, while giving my immune system the kick it needs. This elixir is freaking magical. It combines a powerhouse of ingredients that rev up the immune system and provide relief from all the sneaky cold or flu discomfort.
Nettles, one of the key components, are packed with vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamin C and iron, essential for immune function and overall health. They also possess anti-inflammatory properties that help ease discomfort.
Black elderberry, another superhero ingredient, is known for its antiviral properties. The flavonoids present in elderberries have been found to inhibit the replication of viruses, effectively reducing the duration and severity of symptoms.
Ceylon cinnamon, aside from adding a delightful flavor, contributes to the elixir's health benefits. It contains cinnamaldehyde, which has antimicrobial properties that can help fend off bacterial and fungal infections. Additionally, cinnamon's anti-inflammatory effects can be soothing for the respiratory system.
Last but not least, apple cider vinegar brings its acidity and enzymes to the mix, aiding in balancing pH levels and promoting beneficial gut bacteria. A healthy gut is crucial for a robust immune system and overall well-being.
Next up, I will share my SOUPER (no I didnt…haha) nourishing organic chicken/vegetable bone broth recipe that gets our household on the mend and back on track. We also absolutely love the Once Upon a Farm Immunity Pouches for the little guy. More elderberries and cherries for him- rich in antioxidants, particularly flavonoids, to help strengthen his immune system and combat viruses and bacteria. Additionally, the organic nature of the ingredients ensures that the pouch is free from harmful chemicals and additives, providing a wholesome and nourishing option to support recovery. I find these are the only two things he will eat when he is under the weather! <3
We've found what works for our family, and I hope these ideas bring you some comfort and relief too. Take care, and may your little doodle feel better soon!
